Duluth, MN!!!

Here’s a video journal from the trip home:

Yesterday afternoon, I made the 3-hour journey to Duluth to play a 3-hour set at Fitger’s, a local bar/restaurant with immense popularity up there. It was an interesting show for me and reminded me more of my days playing Thursday night shows at Sportsman’s Pub than of my band’s more recent sets at the 331 Club and Dinkytowner. I met a few awesome people, and there were sporadic bouts of crowd engagement, but for the most part, it was me on stage, dusting off old classics and new material alike and mixing in a few standards here and there. By evenings’ end, I played roughly 40 songs! I even played The Meat Puppets’ Plateau when my new friend, Taylor Baggott, requested “a cover”. Haha! Anyone who has ever seen me play knows that I only play obscure cover songs – the type that nobody wants to hear. ;)

BP Green Gas Station Gig and LETRON

Check out the photos below from my final show of the tour – at the BP Green Gas Station in L.A. Playing for a small crowd and hundreds of gas tank filler-uppers was lots of fun. The crowd, in particular, was quite receptive, but it was also fun to have people in cars pull up and listen for a song or two before rolling out to their destination of choice. Thomas was on hand all the way from Minneapolis, MN to support me and film the video above – THANKS, THOMAS!!!

And here are some from LETRON’s show in L.A.:

BACK IN MINNEAPOLIS!!!

Bomb Pop

I pulled an all-nighter and returned home to Minneapolis yesterday morning in a dizzying state of excited tiredness. Lisa picked me up at the airport, and we spent a great day together visiting the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, eating Bomb Pops, and watching Curb Your Enthusiasm. Fantastic!!

I have all sorts of photos to post, including shots from my final gig at the BP Green Gas Station in Los Angeles as well as the last known photos of my beard (R.I.P.). All those photos and more will be posted as soon as I get the chance…probably early tomorrow.

Oh! Tonight I am going to the Less Than Jake show at First Ave. I’ll be interviewing the lead singer, Chris, for Lunch of Champions. Long live rock!!

Monterey, CA

The Monterey Aquarium in Monterey, CA houses an amazing display of living jellyfish. I had the pleasure of visiting on my way down from San Francisco last week. Check out my photos!

San Francisco, Day 2

Day #2 in San Francisco! After spending all night partying with the kids from Europe and getting virtually no sleep, I jumped in my car and drove across the Golden Gate Bridge. I found a trail over in Marin City and walked a bunch, cleared my head, and wrote a sweet song. Then I met up with my parents, and played the show at Blondie’s Bar and No Grill in San Francisco. Here are the photos:

San Francisco, Day 1

Some highlights:

  • Sleeping in my car
  • Parking my car
  • Walking uphill, both ways, to my show
  • Running from homeless people at 5 a.m.
  • Freezing

So I arrived in San Francisco at 5 p.m. or so, and I parked in what must have been the most interesting spot in the whole city, as upon parking, my car was almost immediately swarmed by homeless people of all makes, asking for anything from drugs, jokes, and porno. I checked into my hostel, which was just down the block before heading back out to move my car to higher ground. Actually, it was the highest ground in San Francisco at the corner of Sacramento and Taylor, right across the street from some uppity condos.

Before, during, and after my show at the Green Tortoise Hostel, I was drinking with folks from all over Europe (Ireland, Germany, Holland, Spain, England) as well as Connecticut’s favored son, Pat Hull, who totally rocked it on the mic after my set. After we played, there was an impromptu soccer game behind the stage area, then some pool and all sorts of goofing off (It’s easy to have fun when there’s an Irishman leading the charge – Thanks, Coleman!).

Then at 2 a.m., I stumbled to my car up on the hill, and, deciding the walk to the hostel was too much, I reclined and fell asleep. But it was damn cold in that car. DAMN cold. I didn’t sleep too well, and at 5 a.m. I trucked my legs past the homeless swarms and into my hostel only to find someone in my bed. The guy at the front desk then booked me into a hotel down the block, where I slept for the next three hours (I had to move my car by 9 a.m.).

Here are some photos from the day and evening:

Live at "The Clubhouse @ This Old House" in San Luis Obispo, CA

Last night was totally awesome. I played at The Clubhouse @ This Old House in San Luis Obispo, CA with Mark Adams (of Rancho Deluxe), GARON, Paul Hobbs, Dave Seawater, Gary Foshee, Deb Kirk, Jasmine Miranda Crowe, Chloe Andresen, and a couple of others. I hadn’t heard of any of those folks before last night, but WOW! They totally brought it. Together we put together what might be the best night of music I have ever been privy to.

Each group played for 15 minutes, with the exception of Adams, who played a 45-minute set of his originals. My set included “True Affection”, “Boulder”, and “Leaving L.A.” – 3 songs that I felt I could pull off despite my nervousness of the evening. I’m not sure why I was nervous, as I wasn’t nervous at either of the first two shows of the tour… Hmmm… Anyway, my next show is at Linnaea’s in San Luis Obispo on Saturday, then it’s off to San Francisco for three nights of rocking in a row.

Here’s some video footage from last night:

Tiki Surfs! …and other tales from Central California

My sister’s dog, Tiki, it turns out, is quite the little surfer! Check out the surfing photos of her below.

I am currently in Paso Robles, CA with my parents, who have given me a room to myself to stay in while I’m here – something I never had in all my years living in Richmond. There was always someone walking in, playing the drums, sleeping on the floor, or otherwise being in my general vicinity. But here, there is nothing but space.

Tonight I play in San Luis Obispo at a musician showcase. I am quite looking forward to mingling with some of the locals.

Oh! And here’s a video of my mom going down her waterslide. :)

…and here’s some classic Mr. Bean:

Noah's Birthday Party

Noah’s 31st birthday party marked the first time in two years that all the Cryns kids have been gathered together in one place. To mark the occasion, we recorded this SWEET rap song at around 1 a.m.

Here’s the famous dance-off:

Tour Officially Launched!! Download MP3s from Last Night's Show!

Last night’s show at Lestat’s in San Diego totally rocked and was a fitting kick-off to the tour. Ivan Cheong opened the evening and was followed by one of the most technically-gifted guitarists I have ever met, Mark Kephart. Mark was, to put it simply, amazing.

I was headlining for some reason, and took advantage of the situation to totally rock the place. I played a fun, upbeat set of new and classic Cryns #3 numbers as well as The Blow’s “True Affection”. One of the funnest parts of the evening was seeing my name in lights on the marquee. That has never happened to me in all my life, so it was exciting to kick off the tour like that. The marquee was saying, “Cryns #3 is in San Diego, MFs!!” haha!

Lou, the sound technician at Lestat’s, was kind enough to record the show for me last night, and I have posted the mp3s below for your listening pleasure. Or if you would like, you can download all the mp3s in a zipped folder by clicking here. These mp3s are free to share with friends and are fully compatible with your iPod.

1) True Affection
2) Boulder
3) Lookin’ Past Me
4) Rock Star
5) Sometimes I Cannot Sleep
6) Duluth
7) Hey Little Sister 8) In the Middle of the Night
9) Leaving L.A.
