Acadia Cafe Wrapup – March 18, 2009

I had a blast playing the Acadia Cafe tonight!  Eliza Blue warmed up the stage for us, and we, in turn, warmed it up even more for Jack Ventimiglia, who is a fresh face from Detroit, MI.  Jack really played some nice songs and provided a great close to the evening.

Dave sat in on the djembe tonight, which was a lot of fun!  He talks a lot on stage and at one point even noted that he was going to steal my thunder or something like that, which was pretty funny at the time.  I’m not sure I have any thunder to share, but he is certainly welcome to it. The crowd was great – more rowdy than usual for the Acadia.  At one point they started clapping in rhythm, so I asked them to keep it up while we burned through “Quittin’ My Job”.  Then a couple of songs later, I saw Eliza clapping along, and I asked the crowd not to leave her hanging, and they abliged by adding their claps to hers.  A fun night, I tell ya!  Here are some photos courtesy of the beautiful Lisa M. and me:

Dinkytowner Last Night

Holy cow, did we ever rock it last night. I haven’t felt so good about a performance in a long time. We were well-practiced, Ryan hit his quota of half a beer before we took the stage, John was hot on the sticks, and I was caked in sweat by the end of it all. My ever-longening rockstar hair was also a factor.

Today I am tired, worn out, and ready to do it all over again.

Bringing Online Social Media to My Band

I am reading David Meerman Scott’s “The New Rules of Marketing & PR“, and I am thinking of new ways to market my band, including blogging, podcasting, and press releases. I am already doing all three of these things with little consistency and little measurable results. That is, I am not sure if all my blogging, press releases, YouTube videos, and podcasts are having any impact on my fan base.

For the new Cryns #3 album, Faraway Farm, I am considering releasing all of the tracks with a Creative Commons license, allowing any non-commercial entity to use the tracks as they wish. Plus, I am thinking of doing the same thing with the source tracks, allowing hip-hop groups to sample specific vocal or instrument tracks of the album. It will also allow people to utilize my tracks on YouTube mash-ups and any other sorts of mash-ups or cut-ups that are imaginable.

I am at a point in my life where I just want something to happen with my music. I want to be interviewed. I want people to show up to my concerts. I want to look out at crowds and see people listening and singing along. I want to tour Europe and the West Coast (again).

I also want to use this release as an opportunity to test many of my online social media theories. Mainly my belief that honesty and openness on the web can make this band thing more exciting. Playing in a band is one of those addictions that have few moments of rewards borne of many thousands of hard work. Disappointment is a re-occuring emotion after shows. It’s not anyone’s fault. I have heard all sorts of popular actors and musicians talk about the loneliness of their work, and I am beginning to see what they mean. No matter how popular or famous or rich I get, I still live a normal life with normal people. And when the lights have dimmed, and I have left the stage, it is still just a night out on the town with my super hot girlfriend, who, despite my great efforts to prove the contrary, still does not view me as a hugely popular rock star.

Getting back to the online social media thing, I think that linking up with friends and fans in real time, online, as I am touring, might provide me with a greater sense of satisfaction with my music than has been previously afforded.

Eagles vs. Rockets this Friday at the Acadia!

I would be overwhelmed with joy if one or two of you showed up to the Acadia this Friday, Nov. 7 to support the second live performance by my new old band, Eagles vs. Rockets.  The band features my former Corrupt Senators, Speakeasy Heroes, Big Jerry, Cryns #3, and JC & the Moonshine Band mate, Rev. Bob Serrano, on the bass guitar and Pocahontas County‘s Colin “the Czar” Anderson channeling Kanye West on the banjo.  We will have T-Shirts and cds for sale and display.  Hope to see you there!

Photos from the Dinkytowner

I finally posted the photos from our Dinkytowner show a couple of weeks ago! Whew! What a show it was! We rocked it pretty hard, spitting out a powerful set of Cryns #3 tunes with a Mason Jennings cover in there just for show. Many thanks to Jim, Niles, Lisa, and the significant others for supporting us!

Duluth, MN!!!

Here’s a video journal from the trip home:

Yesterday afternoon, I made the 3-hour journey to Duluth to play a 3-hour set at Fitger’s, a local bar/restaurant with immense popularity up there. It was an interesting show for me and reminded me more of my days playing Thursday night shows at Sportsman’s Pub than of my band’s more recent sets at the 331 Club and Dinkytowner. I met a few awesome people, and there were sporadic bouts of crowd engagement, but for the most part, it was me on stage, dusting off old classics and new material alike and mixing in a few standards here and there. By evenings’ end, I played roughly 40 songs! I even played The Meat Puppets’ Plateau when my new friend, Taylor Baggott, requested “a cover”. Haha! Anyone who has ever seen me play knows that I only play obscure cover songs – the type that nobody wants to hear. ;)
